Descripción

Three-quarter leather and marbled boards. 8vo. (xxxi), ad leaf, 273pp, errata. Engraved frontispiece. Illustrated with 77 numbered plates and 3 unnumbered engravings. With original autograph letter from Sir William Gell laid in (circa 170 words). First edition. Gell, an English archaeologist, served as consort to Caroline, consort of the prince of Wales, and accompanied her to Italy in 1814. His work, of which this is the first volume issued, informed Europe about what was being revealed as the ancient Roman towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii were slowly being uncovered. There was a constant demand in Europe for books illustrated with accurate pictures of the site. Gell made drawings on the spot using the camera lucida. Gandy, an architect and landscape designer, was largely responsible for the text. The plates in this volume show tomb interiors, decorated rooms, buildings and ruins, paintings and decoration, and there are also many detailed maps. Many of the plates are folding and there are 2 in color. The autograph letter from Gell, which is undated, is addressed to a Mr. Claxton, thanking him for sending a copy of his book, and mentioning a possible visit. Gell also discusses the political situation, the arrival of the new Secretary of Legation, Mr. Kennedy, Sir Grenville Temple of Malta, trade matters, the current financial situation, visits with friends, and other matters. The letter is written in very small ink script on a small piece of stationary folded over for mailing. All autograph material from Gell is quite rare. Condition-wise the text and plates in this copy are in very good shape with the amount of foxing one would expect for a book of this age. The binding is in rather poor condition with the front cover detached and the spine completely lacking. The leather tips are worn and there is some scuffing and wear to the marbled boards.
