Satirical verses first published in 1697. This is the final edition with the extremely scarce 4th volume containing 7 engravings. All volumes 4¾ x 7½" and good in full calf with stamped designed to front and rear boards, 5 raised bands on the spine, decorated in gilt with title on red morocco label. All Printed for the conger Thomas Tebb and Theoph. Sanders in Little Britain, Edw. Symon at the Black Bull in Cornhill and Francis Clay the Bible without Temple Bar. Vol. I two parts bound in one. From the Time of Oliver Cromwell, to the Abdication of K. James Second. Written by the Greatest Wits of the Age. First published in 1697, and subsequently in 1698, 1699, 1702, 1703, 1710, this Sixth Edition Corrected 1716 which is the same as the 1710 edition save for the date of publication. Top and bottom of spine chipped. Boards rubbed and corners bumped. Front joint cracked but firm and tight. A little worm damage to first 12 leaves. Clean and bright with no foxing or discolouration but a hint of mild damp staining on some pages. Ink signature on fep. Vol II From the Reign of K. James I. to the Year 1703. Written by the Greatest Wits of the Age. Many of which were never before publish'd. First published 1703 this is the second edition which is a reprint of the first edition. pp. xii + 468. Boards rubbed and corners bumped. Top and bottom of spine chipped. Front joint cracked but firm and tight. A little worm damage to 181-208 and 293-343. Corners of first two leaves cut off. Ink signature on page facing title page. Some pages browned and a hint of mild damp staining on some pages. Vol III From the Year 1640. to the Year 1704. Written by the Greatest Wits of the Age. Most of which were never before publish'd. This is second edition which is as reprint of the first edition of 1704. pp. xi + 422. Boards rubbed and corners bumped. Top and bottom of spine chipped. Ink signature on page facing title page. Some pages browned and a hint of mild damp staining on some pages. Some little portraits in faint pencil to endpapers (which could easily be rubbed out). Vol IV From the Year 1620. to the Year 1707. Many of them by the most Eminent Hands. Several of which were never before publish'd. To which is added, a Collection of some Satyrical Prints against the French King, Elector of Bavaria, &c. Curiously engraven on Copper-Plates. This is a reprint of the first edition of 1707. pp. xii + 468. with 7 plates. Boards rubbed and corners bumped. Top and bottom of spine chipped. Some pages browned and a hint of mild damp staining, but mostly clean and bright. Front hinge cracked but firm and tight. A little worm damage to 10 leaves. McTague points out evidence of censorship on pp. 114 and 128. The engravings relate to the defeats suffered by the French alliance in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession.
