Oblong small quarto measuring 10" x 7". Black cloth over paper boards. Contains 170 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 3.5" x 5.5" with some captions. A good only album with edgewear and loose pages and photos with near fine photographs. A family photo album kept by Helen M. Boehm of New Jersey from 1908 to 1918 hand titled "Helen M. Boehm Photographs 1913, '14, '15 - Please leave photos in the book." Many of the early photos are portraits of family members with the date written on the bottom edge. However a majority of the photos are of women enjoying each other's company with captions such as "sisters all" which speaks to the camaraderie between these women seen throughout the album. One section of snapshots are of women posing during a "lunch in the woods" in 1913 with captions like "votes for women" and "posing for the movies." Most of the photos are of women posing sweetly with flowers or playfully with each other, including sitting on each other's laps. There are occasional photos of them with their husbands or children or other families. Some of the photos show girls goofing off at the beaches in the area including Coney Island, Rockaway, and Bethany. Here they can be seen smiling and making human pyramids. A few photos show the start and finish of a "potatoes race" with girls running through a field with potatoes on spoons. Another photo of a group of women dressed as men reads, "our boys?" A section of 10 photos show the women dressed as clowns and posing with one photo captioned "some boy" of a girl dressed in men's clothing. They can also be seen later in the album dressed as Native Americans with headdresses and their hair in long braids. Later in the album there are photos of Helen's brother, James Boehm, who fought in World War I and was killed in 1918 in France. The photos are of James and another unnamed soldier posing with Helen in 1917 presumably after his basic training and before he was shipped overseas. An interesting collection of photographs of a young woman's family and her friendships with other women. N° de ref. de la librería 402735
