Descripción

Complete first edition, by the theologian, philosopher and scientist Josef von Weber (1753-1831), who taught successively at Dillingen, Ingolstadt, Landshut and finally Dillingen again. 'Weber’s thought went through three phases. In the 1780s at Dillingen, his writings were logical and metaphysical works inspired by the Enlightenment thought of Leibniz and Wolff. Starting in the 1790s at Dillingen, he entered into a Kantian phase and defended Kant's work against Stattler. Here he creatively appropriated Kant's philosophy and in some ways anticipated the transcendental Thomism of Maréchal and Rahner. Finally, in his writings and teachings after 1802 in Landshut and at the Dillingen Lyceum, he came to reject the Enlightenment and Kant’s philosophy and instead embraced the idealism of Schelling. He followed Schelling in founding the Christian religion (specifically Catholicism) on the rational intuition of God. In so doing, he embraced Schelling's identity theory in which God is the Absolute Reason or the Wholly Real in which objectivity and subjectivity, being and thought, ideality and reality are united, and nature, human spirits and Christ are manifestations of the progressive self-realization of this Absolute' (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 7 parts in 4 volumes, 8vo, c.1,000 pp., contemporary plain wrappers, foxing throughout (mostly mild) and occasional light waterstaining, but a very good set, uncut and ALMOST ENTIRELY UNOPENED.
