Descripción

This original hand-coloured lithograph plate of Colt's Foot was printed in Vienna in 1828-1829 and was illustrated by Ignaz Stenzel. It comes from the first and only edition of Daniel Wagner's "Pharmaceutisch-medicinische Botanik". It was printed on top quality folio-size woven paper and is in excellent condition. Ignaz Stenzel was an artist who did a good deal of work for Leopold Trattinick (a noted botanist and illustrator), but the bold and skillful plates he executed for Wagner's book are considered his best work and the pinnacle of Viennese botanical illustration for the period. Daniel Wagner was an apothecary at Pressberg (Bratislava), and owned a drug and chemical factory in Pest. He arranged for his work to be produced in Vienna in order to take full advantage of it's then unrivaled facilities. Wagner's "Botanik" was printed at his own cost and is especially notable for it's rarity as he sacrificed quantity for quality in the print run. It would seem that for this reason this exquisite work has for many years gone surprisingly unnoticed and unappreciated by historians of botanical illustration, as it is not mentioned in several famous catalogues of botanical prints, which include "Great Flower Books" and those by Blunt and Dunthorne. It is unrecorded in the catalogues of the Lindley Library, Linnean Society, Royal Horticultural Society, and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Copies are recorded at the British Museum (Natural History), Kew Gardens, Berlin (Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz), New York (Herbarium of the New York Botanical Garden), and in Cleveland's Holden Arboretum.
