Folio. Three-quarter cloth and boards. Large portfolio (18 by 22 inches) containing 5 facsimile maps and 2 page text booklet. Limited to 300 copies. Typography by Carl P. Rollins of the Yale University Press. This is Rollins' personal copy with a typed letter of appreciation from Clements Director, Randolph G. Adams, tipped in. On July 11, 1796, Detroit joined the United States. General Wayne extablished the Headquarters of the United States there and commissioned Patrick McNiff, former British deputy-surveyor, to draw a map of the Detroit area. A six-foot long manuscript map was prepared, depicting the region of the water communication from the southern end of Lake Huron to the western end of Lake Erie. But the most important feature of the map is the American shore showing the "ribbon farms" and giving in each case the name of the property owner. No other similar document of this date and with so much detail is known to exist. Sent to James McHenry (Secretary of War in Washington's cabinet) in December of 1796, this map remained among his family papers until 1944, when it was purchased at auction by the library. This portfolio includes the five sections of the map reproduced in collotype by the Meriden Gravure Co., and a descriptive and historical essay by F. Clever Bald, of the University. The maps and text are in fine condition with some light soiling and wear. The portfolio is very good with some soiling to the boards and some light staining to the rear cover. Scarce. Postage extra.
