Very Good in illustrated blue cloth hardcover with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. ENHANCED BY two handstamps of St. George's Mechanics Institute Library dated March 25, 1899, to verso of front cover and to first blank endpaper; librarian's lettering on spine, very slightly cocked; hinges starting sightly. Complete in ix, 277 + [3] pages. 19 cm. Frontispiece. 11 additional plates. This is the third of five related books by this remarkable 19th century traveller through northwest Canada. McDougall was a missionary but was not blinded by his religion to the values and accomplishments of Indians and Metis. He spoke a number of Indian languages and was an astute observer and participant in the frontier and fur trade adventures of the mid to late 19th century. Peel #1546. P. S. Mechanics' Institute movement was initiated in Great Britain to provide educational opportunities for the urban working class. The Toronto institution was established on Christmas Eve, 1830, when a small group of men met in the Masonic Hall on Colborne Street. Like in Britain, the founders wished to encourage adult education by providing a library, lectures and night classes. The library they established became the beginning of the Toronto Public Library System. N° de ref. de la librería 32834
