Descripción

384 pages; Contents clean and unmarked and secure in original binding of brown cloth decoratively stamped in blind on boards and in gilt at spine. Gilt faded at spine, cloth worn at spine ends and corners. A wonderful nineteenth century compendium of Peter Parley tales collected as a resource for the entertainment and instruction of the young. The first essay is about the New York Crystal Palace; others include architecture in India, Silk Spinning Machines, the Chinese Wall, The Carrier Pigeon, May Day in Georgia, Wanderings in South America, Hammocks and Panniers, Glass Making, etc. Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793-1860) became a bookseller and publisher at Hartford and later in Boston. Beginning in 1828, he published an illustrated annual, The Token, for a period of 15 years. The Token contained some of the earliest work of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry W. Longfellow. In 1827 under the name of Peter Parley, he began writing and publishing his series of books for the young, which embraced geography, biography, history, science, and miscellaneous tales. Many of those articles are gathered in this book. N° de ref. de la librería 40581
