Descripción

It was not until 1902 that a State-funded secondary school was established in Palmerston North. Prior that any post-primary tuition was "left to be given by private enterprise." The High School had its origins in the College Street Public School, which was elevated to district high school status in 1902. The board of the District High, realising that an independent high school would soon be required decided that this should be located on a different site. The opening roll for the district high (February 1902) was 84 -- 40 boys and 44 girls, with lessons initially held in a former church hall. The new High School was established by early 1904 but was burned down in 1910, with the new school opened a year later. Palmerston North High soon acquired a reputation for excellence in all forms of education and continued to enhance this through and beyond its half-century. In this detailed account of the High School's establishment and growth the author covers every aspect of its activities and acheivements, from important events, teaching staff and board appointments, honours and prize lists, sports records, roll increases, the impact of two world wars and the end of the co-educational aspect of the school with the opening of a PN Girls High School in 1920, with the one Board of Governors responsible for both, and uniquely at one time, for three post-primary schools. Briefly discussed also are the inital moves within the educational community of Palmerston North to instigate higher learning by the establishment of a university, another sign of the city and region's progressive approach to academic learning. An interesting and comprehensive study of the evolution of NZ post-primery studies in a provincial enviroment. First edition of 1952, 230 pages including numerous lists and tables, illustrated with 36 b/w photographs. Blue hard covers of stiff card are VG+ with dark blue front titles and a blue reinforcing fabric spine strip, small and unobtrusive blemish above lower front edge, internally NF, no inscriptions.
