Descripción

4to, [18],133,[3]pp, with 13 engraved plates. Contemporary calf with elaborate gilt decorated spine, front hinge weak. As Professor of Mathematics at the College Mazarin and Professor of Greek and Latin at the College de France, Pierre Varignon (1654-1722) was one of the most noted scientists of his time. He was a close friend of Newton, Leibniz, and the Bernoullis, often striving to act as mediator between them. He was the first French scientist to understand the importance of the new differential calculus. This is the first edition of the author's first book and the first treatise in which the whole science of statics was deduced from the principle of the parallelogram of forces- which Varignon enunciates simultaneously and independently of Newton. A rare work. Please also see my other Newton listings. N° de ref. de la librería 941
