With the country's geographical position so strategically significant to Britian and the fact trhat Gawilor possessed significant military forces, Britain sought assurances from the Gwailor council of regency. The council refused to enter into discussions leading Britian to declare war. The Gwailor forces were routed and the regency capitulated and on 31st December 1843 a treaty was signed that effewcticely gave control of the country to Britain.
