It first appeared in the New York Sun, and was reprinted in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, May 11, 1850. While rather brief, it can be classed as of the greatest importance, for it supplies the key to one of the Death Valley mysteries that have had historians second guessing one another to the date of this publication.
