(xxxi) + 703pp., , with 30 bw illustrations and 12 maps/plans, some in colour. Blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine, with a removable protective plastic cover. Wear and bumping to extremities and folds of spine, worn through cloth in a couple of small areas of edges. Some rubbing and a few small spots to boards, spine darkening. Front hinge cracked and slightly loose, but holding, some losses to paper surface along hinges at eps. A few tiny tears to page edges, edges darkening, a couple of unopened pages at the end, in the glossary. Some internal foxing but generally excellent internally, a fascinating description of the Northern Isles in the 19th century. Inscribed in ink thus on the title-page "M Forster Heddle Esqre Professor of Chemistry, St. Andrews With the Writer's Compliments June 19th 1883." then, in pencil "Given to my dear daughter Kate, M. Forster Heddle". Professor Mathew Forster Heddle was a larger than life character, a renowned academic and one of Scotland's most famous mineralogists. N° de ref. de la librería 001038
