Commander Edwards' account of naval operations before, on D-Day and later related amphibious operations was one of the earliest published following the German surrender in 1945. It is a comprehensive account of planning the assault, the bombardments and the logistics support required to land, reinforce and sustain the forces landed on the Normandy beaches. As the forward points out the five divisioins landed on D-Day rapidly expanded to total five million men, almost one million tanks and vehicles plus 18 million tons of munitions and stores --- that was the measure of the success of Operation Neptune. Set out in three parts: Preperation, Execution and Consolidation this book may have been one of the first covering the naval aspects of D-Day, but it remains one of the most complete and perceptive, examining the enemy counter measures against the Allied operations. Also considered are opening the Channel ports, Walcheren, operations on the Dutch coast and the Rhine crossings. A fine study. 319 pages including index, 16 b/w photos, e/paper maps, few intext diagrams. Black hard covers with gilt front decoration and gilt titles on lightly sunned spine VG, ink gift inscription FFEP verso, small dark stain top left front pastedown decreasing to disappear after first page of introduction, text block otherwise VG with rough cut lower page edges.
