Quarto sheet music format in wraps with photograph of singer Kay Armen on front. No printing specified. Very Good+/: wraps exhibit a few minor bends from routine handling but no chips or tears; light damp-stain to lower left corner approx.1"x1/2". Stamp of California music store on front. Score itself clean & unmarked. 4pp includes front & rear covers; 3 page score with score extending to rear panel. Unusual musical offering from Pulitzer Prize winning Fresno-born writer William Saroyan (My Name is Aram, Human Comedy, Time of Our Lives et al.) and his cousin Ross Bagdasarian, who is probably better known as David Seville, the creator of Alvin and the Chipmunks and the 'Christmas Song'. The song is based on an Armenian folk tune and reflects the hospitality and generosity one offers a guest in the home, though some interpretations of the meaning vary. The song was originally written in 1939 and first recorded by Armen (b. Armenuhi Manoogian 1915-2011)in 1951; it preceded the more famous Rosemary Clooney version, who was said to have disliked it but was forced to sing it nonetheless by Mitch Miller or be fired. The song has also been variously recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, Della Reese and, yes, Alvin & the Chipmunks. OCLC lists only 11 copies including Berkeley, Dartmouth and the British Library. A very nice copy of a scarce piece of California musical ephemera-and one with a surprising and fun history. In Kherdian-sheet music/records-page 159. #30011. N° de ref. de la librería ABE-7103836627
