- Wolff # 3868 - Leaf of adverts. preceeds title page, frontis and 3 other tissue guarded inserted plates ( 2 with double vignettes ) - Pp ( VI ) + 296 - Red bead-grained gilt pictorial cloth on front cover and spine, cream endpapers - signature on endpaper of James Murray, July 15th, 1861 ( the lexicographer ? ) - a bit of chipping and fraying at the spine tips, ( as seen in our scans ) stained spots on top edge, marginal staining here and there, foxing to plates, but overall a tight vg copy, the gilt bright, a very scarce book. The story line is typical of Kingston's fiction which was largely based on his experience on sailing ships between Portugal and England, his honeymoon in Canada ( 1853 ), etc. Later when strapped for cash he turned to translating the adventure fiction of Jules Verne.
