Descripción:

Partly printed document, signed by Alfred L. Sewell. Dated March 30, 1865 this commission appoints Helen Ladd as a Corporal in the Army of the American Eagle. Sewell created this organization to raise funds for the U.S. Sanitary Commission by selling "beautiful album pictures in oil colors" of Live Eagle, the soldier bird. This eagle, named Abe by Capt. Wolf was mustered into Company C of the 8th Wisconsin Regiment. A child could purchase pictures of the eagle singly for 15 cents; if they organized a club pre-paid/post-paid orders could me made for ten to one address for $1, or one hundred for $9. This document indicates that Helen Ladd sold 10 pictures. Sewell is better known for fund-raising for the U.S. Sanitary Commission through subscription sales of "The Little Corporal" in the same manner. Size: Octavo (8vo). N° de ref. de la librería
