Descripción

A splendid Ode, printed in Guayaquil. 1835. Guayaquil. Imprenta de M. I. Murillo. In 4to (253 mm x 170 mm). 1 [blank] + 8. Modern folder, front board lettered in gilt. A fine copy, with a few foxing spots as expected, but generally very good. Apparently the first edition. A remarkably rare Ode to General Flores, printed in one of the less prolific South American printing houses, that of Guayaquil. Juan José de Flores was the first President of Ecuador; in January 1835 he triumphed at the battle of Miñarica, allowing to extend his position as leader of the young country. The author of the Ode was a colleague of Flores, and an Ecuadorian patriot; he is renowned as the author of ¿La victoria de Junín Canto a Bolivar¿; a most famous poem on the revolutionary wars occurred in South America. The printer, Manuel Ignacio Murillo (1802 ¿ 1884) was born in the same city he would found his press later on and could well be considered the most important printer and newspaper Director of Guayaquil of the first half of the 19th century, having worked with ¿El Patriota de Guayaquil¿ (first newspaper of the now-free Province), ¿El Republicano del Sur¿, ¿El Chispero¿ and ¿La Aurora¿. The highlight of his career was printing the ¿Canto a Junín¿, much similar to the ¿Oda al Jeneral Flores vencedor en Miñarica¿ offered here. Sabin, 56686. N° de ref. de la librería 000136
