Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-248 [249] [250-252: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], flyleaf at front, original pictorial brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, floral patterned endpapers, First edition. Occult romance novel of supernatural possession and reviving the dead set in India, New York City and the American West. While tiger hunting in India, Maurice Amilon, in pursuit of a cobra, is led to a cave where he finds the mummy of Uma, a young Indian woman. The cobra is Uma's former lover, a holy man, and the guardian of Uma's mummified body. Maurice has a murderous desire to kill the snake and shoots it in the neck, whereupon the reptile mysteriously disappears. Maurice returns to America with the mummy, restores Uma to life, and falls in love with her. Douglas St. Albans, Maurice's boyhood friend and Indian hunting partner is possessed by the spirit of Uma's Indian lover. St. Albans undergoes a bizarre personality change and becomes Maurice's enemy and rival suitor for the hand of Uma. In a climatic struggle between good and evil, the snake venom is purged from an old wound on St. Albans' neck and Maurice, who is pure of heart and merciful, does not kill his friend. He wins Uma's love. A few days before they are to be married, Maurice dies of pneumonia, and Uma commits suicide; they are united in death. St. Albans, revived and free of the snake venom, marries and emigrates to India. Bleiler (1978), p. 143. Reginald 10357. Wright (III) 3822. Front free endpaper a bit brittle at edges, else a fine, bright copy. An uncommon book. (#149501). N° de ref. de la librería 149501
