The letter is addressed to "Henry" who is apparently associated with Fowler's publisher because he writes: "Certainly I am occupied with the desire to get out the best book I know how to make, as, I am sure, it is yours to publish it successfully and without mental or other reservations." Assuming the publisher to be Viking Press (who issued most of his books) Fowler's statement in the letter that "Pat's visit indeed was an inspirational one" almost certainly refers to Pascal Covici. In the letter Fowler refers to his usual financial troubles: "As to any perplexities of my own private affairs, I most certainly do not ask for anyone else to understand or to applaud my very great talent for mismanaging my worldly assets. It seems that I am one of America's foremost self-unmade men." But the main thrust of the letter is to argue that when he is writing he cannot allow himself to be distracted by anything: "It is as though a pitcher were in the box in the seventh inning, with none out and two on and the score tied, and the trainer were suddenly to appear beside him with the request to leave off pitching (even pitching badly) to come to the dressing room to fix a short in the electric fan." An outstanding missive written with Fowler's characteristic wit. Some 400 words in all, signed "Gene.". N° de ref. de la librería 22564
