Published as a "short history of town government" in Nottingham, the book marks 500 years since the city was granted a Great Cherter in 1449, recognising it as a "perpetual incorporated community," with a Maoror and Burgesses. However, the book explores the early history of Nottingham and its administration back to much earlier times, noting its mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. The history of Nottingham, and its governance, is covered in nine chapters, ending with a reformed council and the evolution of local government. Nottingham's history is probably similar to the developments that occured throughout urban Britain in the period from the mid-1400s to the mid-1940s. First edition of 1949, 93 text pages, followed by a 36 page illustrations section made up of Photos, documents, art, drawings, plans etc, there is also a double fold b/w art frontis. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG, with light wear to edges, corners spine hinges/extremities, few small marks rear board, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
