Descripción

The sub-title for "Northmost Australia" defines the content of the two volumes as being "Three Centuries of Exploration, Discovery and Adventure in and Around the Cape York Peninsula, Queenslad." A further note states that they are based on a study of the narratives of all explorers by sea and land.and many original or hitherto unpublished documents. After a chapter (the first of 50) explaining the early belief that New Guinea formed part of the Australian land mass, the narratives begin with the earliest recorded discoveries in the area, from the opening years of the 1600s, the voyages of Tasman and Cook, leading up to more frequent explorations. By the early years of the 1800s coastal exploration of north eastern Australia was being complemented by some land based expeditions. However, much exploration remained ocean based and the era of extended over-land exploration began with Leichhardt's classic expedition of 1844-45 which occupies four chapters. From that time numerous explorations were mounted, on land and from the sea. The expedition of Burke and Wills and the search for them (1860-62) received two chapters.Six chapters on the Jardine Brothers expeditions of the mid-1860s plus the Somerset and Daintree stories and chapters on the two cruises of HMS Basilisk 1871 and 1873, bring the close of Vol 1. First published in 1921 by Simkin Marshall in a two volume set {vol 1 only here), 366 pages illustrated by b/w frontis photo of author and 20 b/w portraits of explorers/navigators mentioned in text. In a pocket on the back pastedown are eight folded maps, areas from the tip of Cape York to just south of Cairns and east to Point Parker in the Gulf of Carpenteria. With one exception all maps are in good order, some with a few creases, and the exeption has a tear across part the centre, with no loss of image. These eight sheets are the full listing from the maps list at the front. There is also an "index" map showing the boundries of the maps included in the two volumes. Green hard covers with gilt front/spine titles are VG with slight wear to spine extremities, few small/light marks both boards. Faint inscription by former owner top front pastedown, an advertisement featuring poem "The Tragedy" by Henry Lawson, bemoaning the loss of a bottle of cough medicine, is pasted to the FFEP, also a date stamp for May 1946. Bookseller impressed stamp lower corner, otherwise the text block is excellent. Weight 900 grams unpacked -- could require additional postage for overseas delivery. Size: 25cm By 16cm.
