Philadelphia, 1854. 8vo, publisher's brown cloth, 302 pp. plus publisher's advertisements. First edition. Two full page engraved illustrations, many mathematical tables in text. Illustrations are of a locomotive bullt by the Amoskeac Manufacturing Company and a locomotive built by the Norris brothers for the Syracuse and Utica railroads. Recent reback with original spine laid on. A very scarce title by the engineer Septimus Norris, containing a variety of mathematical information on all aspects of locomotive engineering. A good plus copy with some professional restoration done at spine. Some light foxing, some marginal dampstaining to text block, a few areas of erased pencil, contents generally bright and text complete. Bookplate and address of the engineer Louis Nickerson from Johnson, Co., Missouri on front pastedown. A very scarce book in any edition. The first was published in 1852.
