Descripción

"I should as soon think of fighting without my artillery as without my chaplains." This quote is attributed to Field Mashal Montgomery, speaking at a service in Cairo. It is among a number of comments from eminent soldiers when referring to the value of chaplains to the armed services. In his forward to "New Zealand Chaplians in the Second World War" General Bernard Freyberg, CO of the 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force, described the chaplains serving with the forces as .a "fine team, and their untiring efforts were of untold value and did much to sustain and comfort our men during the critical stages of the war." Lead contributor to this official war history was Rev M L Underhill, who was attached to the 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force, which was engaged from the early stages of WWII, serving in the Middle East, Greece and Crete, Egypt, North Africa and Italy. There ia also a chapter covering the Pacific theatre, while the section on chaplains of the Royal New Zealand Navy was provided by Sydney D Waters and for the Royal New Zealand Air Force by Squadron Leader J M S Ross. Rev N E Winhall wrote a general description of the formation and duties of those in the Chaplain's Department. As their numbers were small, compared to the major service branches, likewise their "official history" was probably the smallest in the large number of volumes produced following WWII. Nevertheless, theirs was a story well worth telling and well told it was. First edition of 1950, from the War History Branch Department of Internal Affairs, 188 pages, 35 b/w photos including frontis, three foldout maps showing North Africa/Mediterranean, Itay and Pacific theatres. Red hard covers with black spine titles are VG+, presentation plate to original recipient pasted on half-title, text block otherwise excellent. No inscriptions. N° de ref. de la librería 004719
