The New Whole Duty of Man, Containing the Faith as well as Practice of a Christian: Made Easy For the Practice of the Present Age. As the Old Whole Duty of Man was design'd for those unhappy Times in which it was Written: and Supplying the Articles of The Christian Faith. Which are Wanting in that Book, Though Essentially necessary to Salvation. Necessary for All Families, and Authorised by the King's most Excellent Majesty. With Devotions proper for several Occasions. Also A Help to Reading the Scriptures. With engraved illustrations and a 'family register' from 1793-1883 inscribed in ink to front endpapers and a further ink inscription dated 1836 to verso of title page and to end of PrefaceThe Whole Duty of Man is an English Protestant devotional work, first published anonymously, with an introduction by Henry Hammond, in 1658. It was both popular and influential for two centuries, in the Anglican tradition it helped to define. The consensus view of modern scholars is that the likely author was Richard Allestree, but at the time of publication the High Church tradition it represents was a politically dangerous position. The authorship was well concealed, and it has been noted that the work has been attributed to at least 27 people, beginning with Hammond himself. Condition: In a contemporary calf binding. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and slight marks to boards. Hinges slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound but with front free endpaper loosening and rear free endpaper absent. Bright but with the odd handling mark, slightmarginal tidemarks to title and frontispieceand with slight age toning and marks to endpapers andink annotations to rear pastedown. With slight evidence of past worming and a slight closed tear to frontispiece due to worming. Overall: VERY GOOD. N° de ref. de la librería 025626
