OFFERING: The rare first edition on symmetry in Nature and in classical art and architecture, with reference to the golden ratio and geometry and mathematics, greatly enriched with two annotated, original Samuel Colman color drawings that illustrate aspects of symmetry discussed in the book, one concerning the golden ratio and the Egyptian triangle, the other on ice crystals. PROVENANCE: The two mixed media drawings are unsigned and undated, likely executed ca. 1910. Mounted in identical picture frames, they come from the estate of Caroline Lexow Babcock [1882-1980], the distinguished women's rights and peace advocate. DRAWING I: "Congealed Vapor, or Snowflakes. Illustrating the Power of the Dodecahedron over Beauty." Condition: Fine. A pen & graphite drawing of snow crystals with five examples in three colors (light blue, gold-brown and black) on a mounted sheet with underlying geometric figures and measurements around the peripheries, title in pen & ink and four lines of explanation in pencil at the foot with a cross-out in pen & ink, angle replaced with form. Size: Mounted Sheet (to mat margins): 163 x 143 mm / Mat Margins (to frame): 49 mm / Frame: 303 x 271 mm. DRAWING II: "A Design for a Church Window on the Angles of the Egyptian Triangle of 51 Degrees 30" and 58 Degrees." Condition: Near Fine, scattered light margin spots. A watercolor, ink and graphite drawing of a stained glass church window with arch in seven colors (blue, green, purple, yellow, black, gray and brown) on a mounted sheet with underlying geometric figures + an additional mount for the apex of the arch, measurements in margins, penned label below drawing, title in pen & ink at the foot. Size: Mounted Sheet (to mat margins) + apex of arch: 212 x 148 mm / Mat Margins (to frame): 57 mm / Frame: 382 x 308 mm. Drawing isn't reproduced in the book. Arthur Coan (pp. 281-323), and index; profusely illustrated with 302 captioned, b/w reproductions of drawings and designs by Colman, many full-page, including the frontispiece and 22 numbered plates printed on one side. FORMAT: Publisher's sewn dark olive cloth with title stamped in gold leaf, decorated with a beautiful floral design in gold leaf after Colman on the upper side. SIZE: 242 x 204 mm. SAMUEL COLMAN [1832-1920]: painted two of the iconic paintings of the Hudson River School and with his friend, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and with DeForest and Wheeler, established the design firm, Tiffany & Associated Artists. Among their collaborations are the 1881 interior design for Samuel Clemens' house in Hartford and the 1882 redecoration of the White House for President Chester A. Arthur.
