Llight Tan colored buckram spine with printed brown label. Brown pictorial boards. Named one of the 50 books of the year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Number 7 of the Rare Americana Series. Charles L. Camp introduction with colored drawings by Arvilla Parker. This is one of 500 copies produced - the original 1901 copies are very rare. Dawson was a member of the first overland party to cross the plains in 1841. Dawson was a member of the first overland party to cross the plains in 1841, and he repeated the journey during the Gold Rush of 1849. His narrative was first published in 1901, more than a half-century after the adventures he describes, but, according to Charles L. Camp's introduction, is "surprisingly accurate as to mair events and errs only slightly in matters of detail." [Grabhorn 184; Howell 50:1320]. Tan linen spine, printed brown paper over boards, illustration on front cover, printed paper spine label; binding square and tight, LACKS original dust-jacket, light offsetting to end-papers as is common. Fine. "In 1841, 'Cheyenne' Dawson of Austin, Texas was part of the famed Bidwell-Bartleson Party, along with his brother-in-law and some 'neighbor boys.' After crossing the Colorado Desert and visiting Los Angeles, the prospectors reached the Mariposa diggings in November. Dawson worked the dry diggings and eventually got into freighting and tells how his fellow pioneer Charles Weber of Stockton tried to coax him into ranching. In April 1851, he began the return journey to Texas via the Isthmus." Kurutz.
