Descripción

University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis, 1974. Hardcover w/dj, 6 x 9, Fine/Fine condition, xii, 329 pages, illus, notes, bibliog., index.------------------------------This account of the development of Nazi war propaganda during World War II is based in part on captured German archival material and on interviews with some of the leading figures in Goebbels's propaganda corps. As a result of his research and analysis Professor Baird presents the theory that Nazi ideology and propaganda were based on a mystical, irrational body of doctrine. The author analyzes both the ideological content and the technical handling of the propaganda. In discussing the framework of Nazi mythology he deals with the racial myths, the "Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy," the warrior cult and theme of heroic death, and the myth of "English plutocracy."-------------------------------------------After reconstructing the ideological basis, the author focuses on the practical workings of Goebbels's propaganda machine, presenting new information obtained through interviews with some of the Nazis involved, most notably Werner Naumann, Goebbels's protege at the Propaganda Ministry and the man whom Hitler named to succeed Goebbels on his last appointment list. The author places Goebbels's recurrent jurisdictional disputes in perspective, demonstrating that above all his desire was to orchestrate the thematic content of all Nazi propaganda, not to administer a vast bureaucracy.-------------------------------------------The author traces the interplay between Nazi ideology and the changing tide of fortune at the front. He points to a remarkable transition in the nature of the propaganda as the Blitz victories of 1939 and 1940 gave way to defeat, and shows that when they were at the end of their rope Hitler and Goebbels made a frantic effort to survive by blurring the distinction between party and state, trying to convince the people that the demise of the one would guarantee the destruction of the other.A collection of rare photographs of the principals involved is an added feature of the book.
