Descripción

Published in 1845 in London by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand. Printed by Moyes and Barclay, Castle Street, Leister Square. This set of 3 volumes has nearly seven hundred woodcut illustrations - ALL OF WHICH HAVE BEEN BEAUTIFULLY HANDCOLORED with brilliant tint for a spectacular affect. All other copies only have black and white illustrations. It was published in 1/2 bound leather covers with marbled boards with plain endpapers. The spine has gilt borders and lettering. Defects: leather is rubbed and worn at the corners and top of spine. For best description, see the images. There is no writing, no tears or smudges. Hinges are tight, a dramatic and rare set with the color illustrations. This was the first French novel to talk of the poor conditions of the working people of Paris, and to point out the social iniquities which lead to careers of crime. The novel was extremely popular. The Mysteries of Paris influenced Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, and was imitated throughout Europe, including Alexander Dumas who was inspired to write The Count of Monte Cristo in part by the runaway success of The Mysteries of Paris. Volume 1 contains 484 pages, Volume 2 contains 504 and Volume 3, 442. Weight for all three is 8 pounds, so media mail is recommended. N° de ref. de la librería C0282
