Acerca de

A remarkable novel of survival follows eleven-year-old Tanya, who returns home from the market one morning only to find that her parents are missing and she is now an orphan, and with only Milenka, her cow, by her side, Tanya must outwit greedy villagers and mysterious gypsies.

About the Author:

Stephen Menick has studied philosophy and literary theory in Paris, taught philosophy and French to American high school students, lived with Bedouins in the deserts of southern Jordan, and published articles, essays and fiction in the Village Voice, Press, Iowa Review, Boston Review and Yale Review. His work is listed in the Pushcart Prizes and the Best American Essays. In fiction, he says, the characters always come first-and he likes them complicated. When he writes he tells himself: Make the good guys bad and the bad guys good. The Muffin Child-about a young girl who loses her parents and is forced to meet the evil in the world-is his first novel. It has been nominated for the 1998 National Book Awards. copyright ? 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. All rights reserved.
