This book about the Himalayas and other mountain groups of Central Asia was published in assciation with the Royal Geographical Society and Hammond Innes penned the foreward. The Himalaya Range is internationally famed, lesser known are its associated mountain groups, the Pamirs, Hindu Kush, Karakoram, Kun Lun and Tien Shan all with their own magnificent peaks. In this excellent book Cameron tells of the geological conditions that formed the ranges over millions of years, exploration in the mountains before the Birth of Christ, of the strategic importance of the mountains to generals and despots throughout history and how they have, in ore modern times, become the measure by which mountaineering success is guaged. The author also tells of trade routs crossing the ranges, explorers, scientists and even spies. This excellent book reaveals much that is new about these age-old mountains. Apart from its polished text, the illustrations, many in colour, are outstanding, with the achives of the Royal Geographical Society providing a large number. 248 pages including three appendices, bibliography, index, illustrated throughout, 24 pages photos/paintings in colour, many other b/w photos, also maps. Acerca de

Sinopsis:

Discusses the history and geology of the Himalayas and the other mountains in Central Asia and discusses the efforts to explore these mountains

From Library Journal:

In association with the British Royal Geographic Society and with access to their extensive archives, Cameron has produced a fine sourcebook on the Central Asian mountains. Although emphasis is on explorers and climbers, this is not exclusively a mountaineering book. Early chapters deal with geology, history, and inhabitants of this vast region. Cameron traces British exploration, which began about the end of the 18th century triggered by the East India Company, and follows climbers from late 19th century to the present. Quotes from the writings of these hardy visitors make up a considerable part of later chapters, and one can dip into the book almost anywhere and become immersed in their vicissitudes and triumphs.
