[4] + 288pp., 8vo. In vellum-style cream cloth binding with flap and front pocket. Internally in good condition, lightly-aged, in somewhat grubby binding. In manuscript across front cover: 'May 1927 May 31 1929 | Morgan Motor Company Limited'. The volume gives a valuable sidelight into the finances of an iconic British firm, during a boom period in its history, and place the company squarely at the centre of a network of other firms within the motoring industry. Four preliminary pages of printed text relating to Lloyds Bank are followed by the 144 openings, with credits on the left-hand page and debits on the right. In manuscript at the head of the first opening: 'The Morgan Motor Company, Limited.' And printed beneath this, again across the opening: 'in account with | Lloyds Bank Limited | Capital & Counties Bank Branch. | Malvern', the penultimate line being scored through in red ink. The accounts are written in a number of different hands, one of them likely to be that of H. F. S. Morgan himself. The debits are itemised, and include many attributed to a large number of surnames, several of them recurring (for example Churchill, Pearse, Whittle, Perkins, Harvey, Yeates). There are also occasional disbursements outside the motoring industry, for example: 'Harrods' (reminding us that the company had a concession in the London department store, and the only motor car to be placed in its window), 'Temple Press', 'Worc[ester] C[i]ty. C[oun]c[i]l', 'Brooks Bank', 'National Bank', 'HF.S. Morgan Trustees', 'H.G. Morgan'. But a large part of the disbursements are to firms within the motor industry, many of them based in the Midlands. They include: 'Rolls Royce' (for example £85 12s 0d on 2 March 1928), 'A. A. Oil Co', 'Brit. Oxygen [British Oxygen Co]', 'A. C. Sphinx [AC-Sphinx Sparking Plug Co]', 'B'ham Stoppers [The Birmingham Stopper Co]', 'Imp. Liquid', 'Unit. Flexible [Un. Flexible Tubing]', 'Internat. Silencer', 'Bowden Wire', 'Coventry Chain', 'Brit. Aluminium', 'Lond. Name Plate', 'Shell Mex', 'Dudley Drop Forging', 'Phosphor Bronze', 'Hub Ironworks', 'Coventry Chain', 'Avon Rubber', 'Bout Belting', 'Colwyn Bay Engineering Co', 'Anglo Bosforus [Anglo-Bosphorous Oil Co]','Metallic Seamless Tube', 'Liquid Glues', 'Brittania Tube', 'Rotax', 'Elephant Motors', 'Ivy Works', 'Northern Alum.', 'Station Garage', 'Western Garage', 'L'pool Workshop', 'Anglo Saxon Co', 'Marble Arch Supply', 'S.R.O. Ballbearing', 'County Chemical', 'Mid. Somerset Motor', 'Nat GAs Engine', 'Triplex Safety Glass', 'Holdens Garage', 'Br Cycle & Motor Cycle', 'Grantham Motors', 'Lond Lubricants', 'Amalgamated Carburettors', 'Improved Liquid', 'Brit. Belting', 'Waventree Garage', 'Cotswold Garage'. The substantial credits begin (14 May 1927) with the huge sum of £105,518 8s 9d, and rise by June 1927 to £137,379 6s 9d, before falling back, with a final figure (11 May 1929) of £84, 865 19s 0d. Only on a handful of occasions are the sums paid in denominated other than as 'Sund[rie]s' (for example, 'Int[erest] allowed','A/c Lamb','Morgan Motor 2 a/c', 'Bills discounted Lambs', 'Rebate on Bills', 'HFS Morgan').
