1722 MONASTIC Ancient Abbeys English Monasteries Dugdale Monks Scotland Ireland William Dugdale was 17th-century English historian known for his works of antiquity of English aristocracy and monastics. One of his most important works was Monasticon Anglicanum , a work in which he and Roger Dodsworth described aspects of religious institutions. Dugdale and Dodsworth discuss the roles of monks in monasteries, Benedictine orders, specific churches and cathedrals in England, and outlines of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. Lowndes writes: This work contains chiefly the foundation charters of the monasteries at their first erection. Following the successes of Dugdales work, author John Stevens wrote a continuation of Monasticon Anglicanum , titled The History of Ancient Abbeys . This tome is the first volume from Stevens continuation, published in 1722.
