Título: Mezzotint Portrait of Major General Sir ...
A good mezzotint portrait, titled beneath and now framed in a Hogarth style frame, the General is shown seated wearing the ribbon of his order and the ribbon and clasps of his Crimea Medal. The card mount a little foxed but the print in very good condition. Torrens [1809-1855] was named after his godfather the Duke of Wellington. By 1830 he was a Captain and Adjutant in the Grenadier Guards but after active service in Canada he transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1841. After service in the West Indies he acted as governor of St Lucia for a while but turned down the permanent post. In the Crimean War he headed a Brigade at Alma and Balaklave. He acted bravely at Inkerman where his horse was shot from beneath him. He was himself wounded when continuing to lead his men on foot. His wound finally haastened his death while serving on the staff in Paris and he was buried in Pere Lachaise cemetery there.
