Original brown blind-stamped cloth binding. Octavo. This volume contains the Message of President Buchanan with the report of the Secrectary of the Interior included. President Buchanan was a Democrat who was elected to the Presidency in a three-way race with Millard Fillmore and John C. Fremont. Fremont had run as a Republican and an abolitionist. The Message of Presidnet Buchanan herein is important as it discusses in detail the schism in the Country over the issue of slavery. The intractable positions discussed by Buchanan presage the impending Civil War and is important for that reason. The Report from the Secretary of the Interior is historically useful in describing the Native American situation as it existed in 1860.
