Descripción Rarebooksclub.com, United States, 2012. Paperback. Estado de conservación: New. 246 x 189 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 Excerpt: . Birmingham. Exhaustive search has failed to discover any Richard Bickford, a maker of locks in London, at the period ascribed to the lock. It is well known that the custom prevailed of marking the London dealer s name on goods supplied by provincial makers, and from the similarity of workmanship and design, from its period and inscription, little doubt can exist that John Wilkes was the maker, and that it was probably a show lock for the window of a London tradesmen. A third lock of similar beauty and workmanship, although somewhat smaller, is now in the Birmingham Art Gallery, on loan from the South Kensington Museum. It is of steel, with brass case, pierced with foliage, and measures j inches by five. The inscription, in deeply cut italic letters with flourished capitals, is Johannes fVi/kes, Fecit de Birmingham. The Athen.eum for 1847, p. 863, in a report of the meeting of the Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, held at Norwich in that year, thus refers to another of John Wilkes locks: A small brass lock, a curious specimen of Birmingham workmanship of the 17th century, the maker s name was John Wilkes, and in the front was a figure in high relief whose spur and boot acted as a cover and tell-tale to the keyhole. I copied the inscription because I thought it extremely curious: If I had ye gift of tongue I would declare and do no wrong Who they are yt come by stealth, To impare my lady s wealth. John Wilkes tie Birmingham ftcir.-The few lock makers in Birmingham, late in the 17th century, were mostly of the old town. Charles Pye, however, in his Modern Birmingham, 1819, has the following: Opposite the Quakers Meeting, in Bull Street, there is in front of the house occupied by Mr. Standley a. Descripción Achilles Taylor, Birmingham, 1897. Cloth. Estado de conservación: Good. No Jacket. in the sixteen houses thereof, and of some notable persons associated therewith. xv & 147 pages plus 3 pedigrees on tissue paper and three plates and including 16 illustrations in the text. This is a very sound copy, but the pale blue cloth on the bevelled boards is discoloured and stained - more to do with time and chemistry than exposure to dirt or damp I would think. This is no. 55 of the subscription edition and is signed by both authors. The page edges are deckle and I believe other copies were printed on smaller paper. The book memorialises the fashionable Old Square, demolished at the end of the 19th century to make way for Chaberlain's city improvement scheme. Size: 7½" x 10¼" (180mm x 265mm). Signed by Author.
