A very good set of the possibly first Thomas Roscoe translation with many addition and improvements from the 1771 first English edition of Thomas Nugent publ also in 2 volumes. In period 3/4 calf and marbled boards with a repair to a spine with calf gilt labels contrasting, raised bands, some rubbing, light foxing to prelims as usual for the period, else very good. Copper engraved frontis of Cellini, the full title is The Memoirs of Benvenuto Cellini, Florentine Artist, written by Himself. Cellini born 1501 died 1576 was imprisioned with his wild behavior and prolfligate nature in the year 1558 and wrote this memoirs in prison. Prison did not dampen his spirit, but its ascetism and deprivations lifted him into a higher state of consciousness, limited to bread and water and a slit of sunshine, Sufficient for his prayer of thankfulness. Amazing two volume autobiography, was banned until the 18th century late in England, considered too racy and too irreverent. Nice set. Size: 8vo. N° de ref. de la librería 1000595
