Green buckram cloth. Large quarto. xxviii; 203pp plus plates. Limited to 300 copies printed by Carl Purington Rollins at the Yale University Press. An important study of the influence of Mande culture on the religious beliefs and customs of the Oltec civilization. There are 126 full-page plates of pictographs and glyphs taken from various codexes, many in full color. These show symbols for fire, rain and other elements; Quetzacoatal, Ocelotl and other gods; days of the calendar; crocodiles, jaguar and other animals; warriors; and much more. There are also 4 distribution maps and a word index at the end of the work. A very good copy with some scuffing and soiling to the cloth. The spine has some spotting and fading and there is a faint stain mark to the right side of the rear cover. Internally the text and plates are in excellent shape with no soiling or wear.
