In Hebrew, vowelized (with nikud). Complete in two volumes. Volume 1: 126 pages. 201 x 145 mm. Volume 2: Pages: (2), 129 to 258. 204 x 147 mm. First published in German in 1929 under the title Hans Urian geht nach Brot (Hans Urian Goes out for Bread). Republished in 1931 under the title: Hans Urian: Die Geschichte einer Weltreise (= Hans Urian: Tale [or History] of a world tour). It tells the story of a poor schoolboy who, after his father dies and his mother falls ill, goes out to find bread for his family, an errand that takes him around the world with stops in Greenland, New York, Central Africa, China, and Russia. Throughout the trip he makes new friends, including a talking, multi lingual, flying rabbit named Trillewipp, and learns the ways of the world. All too typical for the period in which it was written, the book has very offensive depictions of foreigners, especially the Eskimos, Africans, and Chinese. Lisa Tetzner, the author, was blacklisted by the Nazis who burned her books in 1933, leading her and her husband, a Jewish Communist, to flee to Switzerland. Tetzner gives the Urian story a socialist slant, especially in New York, and often uses minor characters as mouthpieces to this end. The illustrator of the 1931 German edition was the Bulgarian artist Boris Angelushev (1902-1966), who went by the pseudonym Bruno Fuck [sic], sometimes spelled Fuk. There is no indication who is the illustrator of the Hebrew edition. In early modern Germany the expression Herr Urian or Meister Urian denotes a proverbial unwanted guest.
