Descripción

8vo 8" - 9" tall; [ASSOCIATION COPY - Queen Adelaide with her bookplate and signature] 1821 & 1823. John Murray & John Hunt. Two volumes in one, including the more difficult John Hunt published "The Island". 1st edition, 1st variant of Marino Faliero with Doge speech in 151 in 5 1/2 lines. Soundly bound in period 1/2 polished calf over marbled paper boards; ruling across spine in gilt and blind with black morocco title label. "Faliero" bound with half-title but lacking ad leaf at rear; "Island" lacking half-title and adverts leaf at rear. xxi,[1],261,[1]pp.; [3-7], 8-94 pp. Some several pages of "Island" with evidence of rough opening at the front edge, missing some shallow chips in the front margins of about 5 leaves. Text block slightly trimmed for binding. Adelaide's signature on the right side of the title page has loss of some of the flourish and the final "e' is a little clipped. Her cut paper bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Some light foxing to the front and rear lining sheets. An old manuscript notation to the top edge of the front pastedown, presumably from a books dealer - "First Edition" is signed "L. S. Cockell" [?]. Some mild scuffing to the leather front corners and light rubbing to surfaces of the marbled paper boards. VG. N° de ref. de la librería 29398
