Descripción:

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus by Paul Barron Watson was published by Harper & Brothers in 1884. This 127-year-old, 338-page, ex-library, and thought-to-be First Edition offering is in G+ condition. Along with some of the requisite library markings, there is some modest yellowing of text's pages, noticeable shelf wear at top and bottom edges of volume's spine as well as along the lengths of outer side, and bottom, edges of front and back cover boards. Slight, spotty webbing is seen between front paste down and loose end pages, and between pages 128-129. Finally, two previous owners/users have left their marks, both on the first blank page following the front loose end page: one with name and address toward the top of said page, and the other with a name/address label, measuring 5/8" X 2 3/4", attached to middle third of page. This offering, besides the main text, also includes a highly detailed Table of Contents, List of Numismatical Illustrations, an exhaustive List of the Chief Works Consulted, and a thorough Index. The book's Frontispiece is a reproduction of a bust of the young Marcus Aurelius(courtesy of the Capitoline Museum), and there are, throughout this volume, sketches of Roman medallions and coinage, dating roughly from A.D. 140 to A.D. 172. Presented in seven chapters, the author covers his subject from his birth and childhood through his nearly 20-year reign as Emperor to his death. Marcus Antoninus(born April 26, 121; died March 17, 180) ".was the adopted son of Antoninus Pius. .[Our Subject] introduced many social reforms and founded charitable institutions, but persecuted Christians violently. He defended the empire successfully against the Germanic tribes on the Danube."(from Webster's Dictionary, 1989). Chapter 7 is, by the way, an in-depth, lengthy mixture of fact, and commentary, as to Marcus Aurelius' attitude towards Christianity(this seemed to be the author's main point of interest regarding this particular Roman emperor). If you're still reading, you already know how intriguing Roman history can be, and how bloodthirsty, in so many instances. It makes for some fascinating reading, to say the least. Thanks very much!!. Descripción Forgotten Books, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condición: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Marcus Aurelius Antoninus As to the authorities consulted, I have sought to make use of all that has been written on my subject, whether in ancient or in modern times. The variety of my materials may be seen by referring to the bibliography inserted immediately before the Index to this volume. While I have endeavored to make the list as complete as possible, I am aware that some works of recent date may possibly have escaped my notice. It is hoped, however, that everything has been examined which was written on my subject previously to the sixteenth century. Should it be found that my inquiries have been at all success ful in presenting a truer view of Marcus Aurelius than has hitherto prevailed, the credit must be given mainly to the kindness and efficiency of the officers of the Harvard College Library. I wish, also, to express my deep obligations to the Boston Public Library and to the Boston Athenaeum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
