In the preface to his"little book" James Cowan said its purpose was to present "some of the Maori poetic legends and historical traditions which belong to the Range (Port Hills) and which have not previously been recorded." This is achieved in six chapters, each sub-divided into a number summaries of the folk stories and legends related to a specific area or topic. These are: the story of the rocks, names applied to the Port Hills, how the sacred fire came to Witch Hill, the "Hills of the Llittle People of the Mist.", the Sugarloaf and a Village by the Sea. He was assisted in gathering the material by Hone Taare Tikao, a "Ngai-Tahu gentleman whose uncommonly retentive memory is a storehouse of information on local history." The author hoped the publication of the folk-tales would encourage many Cantabrians to appreciate the scenic beauties of the Port Hills, to which free public access had recenly become available. Cowan's text is supplemented with 23 b/w illustrations, mainly of locations mentioned in the text, a folded map of the Port Hills area is at the front and the frontis is of Hone Taare Tikao. First edition by Whitcombe and Tombs of 1923. VG+ text block is 73 pages and this is slightly smaller than the VG card covers which have several short tears at overlap edges, there is no surface loss and on the front is an applied oval picture of Lyttleton Harbour from the Port Hills, the rear cover has a few ink figures. This light book will be posted at cost. First editions in this condition are now scarce. Size: 19.5cm By 13cm. N° de ref. de la librería 005031
