The first edition of this excellent British Museum publication was produced in 1996 as an introduction to the Maori collections held by the museum. This "revised and expanded" edition was issued in 1998 to accompay the museum's "Maori" exhibition held over four months to mark the refurbishment of the museum and it was the "first major exhibition devoted to the art and culture of the Maori people" mounted by the museum. Included was a new chapter on contemporary Maori art. Apart from the editor, six other writers provided material for the book, chapter headings, being --- Maori Pre-History, Maori -- People and Culture, Maori Society Today, Wood Carving, The Fibre Arts. Maori Collections in the British Museum and Contemporary Maori Art. The contributors are NZ specialists or Museum staff members. Second edition of 1998 from the British Museum Press, 180 pages including three appendices, notes on authors, glossary of Maori terms, references and index, illustrations include 79 colour photos, 56 b/w photos, some art, few sketches/diagrams, three maps.
