Descripción

Title: "Whereas the Honble Navy Board in their [Letter?] of the 31 Ult: have been pleased to Communicate to me the Severall Articles following which have been laid before my Lords of the Admlty by Cap Geo. S. Lo Comr of his Majs Yard at Plymouth [later known as Devonport] , being such as have Occurred to his Observation Since his residence there, and wherein he conceived his Majs Service hath much suffered" Three pages, small folio, some marking but text clear and complete. Text: Namely: Ist. In the Employing a much greater number of Workmen for the bringing into Dock & Cleaning of Ships then that service doth reuire, and the making Extravagant Allowance of Nights & [Tides?] to Servants belonging to ye Officers of ye Yard there. 2. In receiving timber into ye Yard . . . far from agreeing with the Contracts for the Same. 3. In ye unreasonable Allowance Demanded for carv[e]d Worke . . . 4. In the Extrany price paid for some work done to ye dwelling houses of the Officers . . . 5. In the Making extra allownces of Seven or Eight pounds per Quarter for nights . . . of ye Ma: Shipwr; Storekeeper . . . when in reality they did not . . . 6. By the Officers of the Yard their negotiating ye Affaires of such Merchants who have served stores . . . 7. [brass locks furnished free] 8. By exactiing a greater price for the [?] work done in the Yard then it was worth. Lastly for selling ye [Guirts?] of Hemp at publick Sale for little or nothing . . ." He goes on to remind them of the brief to seek out report abuses, etc. He requires a handwritten "Account" "how far the said Rules, Orders and Instructions have been observed by you with especial regard to ye afore rehearsed Articles for their Hons Information . . ." Greenhill, Henry, [later] Controller of Storekeepers' Accounts 27 Oct. 1702-13 Jan. 1705 (Adm. 2/29 p. 219). Left office 13 Jan. 1705 on app. as Commissioner resident at Plymouth (Adm. 2/33 p. 36).
