Descripción

70pp., 12mo. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in sturdy notebook with green and black marbled boards and black cloth spine. Label in French and German on front pastedown. Apparently mainly the work of S. T. Cross, with the sections in French by his wife. There appear to be three children: Titi, Ann and Matilda. The main body of the volume gives (on 48pp.) 'Alice's a/c General Expenses at Wadhurst'. These provide valuable information about wartime prices of items and expenditure including everything from train fares to cough sweets and Ovaltine, sweets, telephone, apples, cocoa, tea, buttons, writing paper, pullover, wrapping paper, vaseline, soap, gum, bus, tomatoes, newspapers, carrots, postcards, Marmite, crochet hook, salad, zip fastener, paraffin, pyjamas, lemonade, ink, shoes, coffee, plaster, jam, laces, 'Titi haircut', gym shoes. The last eight pages are headed 'Payments made for Alice'. These include such items as a railway ticket, comb, eggs, wood. The first eight pages, in French and English, give the expenses of Matilda from January 1938 to November 1940. These appear to consist of transfers of money into her savings account, with references to an Uncle Howard, and to money in the Hague. Titi. Ann's accounts follow, also over 8pp., and in French and English, covering the same date range. References to Hannah, Uncle Howard, and a transfer to Wadhurst. N° de ref. de la librería 13524
