4to., 53 pages, written in a very neat early 18th Century hand, preserved in the original semi still marbled paper covers, light wear. A Collection of Riddles selected from various sources, some previously unknown gathered into one collection. One leaf containing Riddle 3 has been excised First line of the first listed._:- 1. In many a curious wreath around. 2. In the dark mansions of the briny deep 4. Flavia the least & slightest Toy 5. When mortals from their labour cease 6. Lusty & strong I am, yet weakest too 7. Who dares affirm my power is weak 8. Things of importance by my aid 9. England & Holland chiefly claim my birth 10. Tell me the Lady's name, who paints so fine 11. In a room big enough for work or for play 12. All nations & countries can boast of my birth 13. Near to the purling streams I rest. 14. When from my watery grave I come 15. Tis my hard fate, four Masters to have had 16. My usual food, like that of labouring swain 17. Sublime, erect, I cut the yielding air 18. Let fame select in every learned Age The title may be misleading because according to modern sources the first Riddle in English was "Why does the chicken cross the road?" which first appeared in 1847 in the New York Monthly Magazine "Knickerbocker".
