SIX PAGE MANUSCRIPT FOLIO. (16" X 22"). Inventory of Donnington Castle Plantation in Jamaica. Tied together with string in the upper left corners. The pages are made of parchment, with some minor browning and chipping to the page edges. There are a couple of closed tears, which have been expertly repaired. The document is written in a very neat hand. The first four pages show the inventory of "Negroes." Each page has double columns with four categories. Column one is the "name" of the slave. Column two is titled "condition." Column three is titled "occupation." Column four is untitled, however the monetary value per slave is shown. The list consists of approximately 260 slaves. Page five lists the provisions and additional slave inventories. Page six is a narrative summary of the total inventory of the estate and is signed by Sir John Dalling and dated 1789. There is one other inventory from this plantation which is dated in the early 1800's and held by the British Museum. The document is housed in a custom beige clamshell box with the title in gilt to the front board. There is detailed information concerning the history of Donnington Castle Plantation and Sir John Dalling available on the Net. An incredible document concerning slavery in the 18th century.
