Entries on mental disorders include sidebars with the characteristic criteria for that diagnosis. High school students, undergraduates, and others will find a wealth of information in this useful set."--"The Top20 Reference Titles of the Year," American Libraries, May 2004.Covers a variety of topics in psychology, including disorders, treatments, diagnoses, tests, and notable figures in the field.
From Booklist: This update and major revision of the Survey of Social Science: Psychology Series (1993) is a change in style as well as name. Not only are there fewer volumes (four rather than six), but the content has been made more accessible to the general reader and high-school or lower-division college student. Instead of standardized style and organization, the new edition varies the presentation as the editor and contributors felt appropriate for the content. There are 177 new entries, and 103 have been revised. The remaining 162 appeared in the original.
Each volume has a complete list of entries, which vary from one to eight pages in length. There is also a categorized list of entries under 66 broader subjects (such as "Emotion," "Psychopathology," "Sleep"). Each entry begins with a statement of the type of psychology and the fields of study into which the information falls. All essays in the 1993 version had standard subheadings, but many of these have been reformatted, with subheadings tailored to fit the topic. There may be a short summary statement and a list of key concepts, as appropriate. Each entry is accompanied by a short annotated bibliography of "Sources for Further Study." These are followed by see also recommendations.
Volume 4 includes a lengthy detailed index to the set. It also has a 25-page glossary and an annotated bibliography divided into categories. This is followed by a Web site directory of associations, academic informational sites, mental health and self-help organizations, and other psychologically related sites. Of special interest is the "Mediagraphy" of films and television programs dealing with psychiatric or psychological issues. "Organization and Support Groups" is a directory of North American and international services, associations, foundations, and societies. An 11-page summary of pharmaceuticals used for depression, anxiety, and other disorders includes brief commentary, generic and trade names, dosages, and side effects. One-paragraph biographies of 60 prominent psychologists (some of whom are also the subjects of encyclopedia entries) appear in the "Biographical List of Psychologists." The supplementary information section is topped off by a list of references to notable court cases from 1843 to 2002 involving psychological issues.
Much has happened in the last 10 years, both in psychology and in people's information expectations, making the revision worth considering for libraries catering to an interested lay public, high-school students, and beginning college students. It also appears to be a useful ready-reference tool for librarians. RBB

Descripción Salem Press Inc, United States, 2003. Hardback. Estado de conservación: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The standard reference source for the fundamentals of psychology study - the 1993 Survey of Social Science: Psychology - is now massively revised, redesigned, and updated. Magill s Encyclopedia of Social Science: Psychology covers not only the history of the field and the core aspects of behaviorism, cognitive psychology, and psychoanalytic psychology but also diagnoses, disorders, treatments, tests, people, and issues. This new encyclopedia streamlines many of the older topics by replacing them with helpful overviews, and it provides a more comprehensive view of the field. Of the 452 entries, 177 are completely new; 103 are substantially revised, often the result of advances in diagnosis and treatment or changes in standards from the revised third edition (1987, DSM-III-R) to the text revision of the fourth edition (2000, DSM-IV-TR) of the American Psychiatric Association s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; the remaining entries are re-edited and reformatted for easier use. The annotated Sources for Further Study for all entries are also updated with the most recent scholarship. Entries in Psychology range from one to eight pages. Every entry begins with standard information: title, date (where relevant), type of psychology, fields of study, a statement of significance, and a list of key concepts. The date is provided when theories were first presented, organizations were founded, and tests were designed. Biographies also include an Identity heading indicating nationality and discipline or specially, as well as birth/death date and place information. The abstract briefly defines the topic and summarizes its importance to psychology. Key concepts lists five to ten of the most important and topic-specific concepts discussed. The text of each article offers a clear and concise discussion of the topic. An entry on a mental illness addresses its cause, diagnosis, treatment, and impact. An entry on a theory or school examines its origin, history, and current status. An entry on an organization covers its history and functions. An entry on a psychological test discusses its development and applications. A biographical entry addresses the life, career, and contributions of the individual. All terminology is explained, and context is provided to make the information accessible to general readers. The solid annotated Sources for Further Study sections offer citations to secondary sources for additional information on the topics. All essays are signed and conclude with a list of cross-references to related articles within Psychology. Nº de ref. de la librería AAN9781587651304
