Parchment Library Series; Contents clean and tight in original binding of cream art vellum with lettering in red and black, endpapers mildly toned, colophon of intertwined tree of science and tree of life on front board and titlepage. Beautifully printed by The Chiswick Press under the direction of Charles Worthington II; bound by Burn and Company; engraved frontispiece portrait of Tennyson; top edges gilt, other edges uncut. A charming edition of Tennyson's work. Charles Kegan Paul initiated the Parchment Library Series in 1880. He declared: 'The intention of this series was to present in thoroughly good paper and print some of the most distinguished English classics, and we certainly set the fashion of really beautiful books." "The series began with editions of two particularly popular poems by Tennyson. IN MEMORIAM and THE PRINCESS both appeared in the small and compact Parchment Library format that became familiar. Each edition was about sixteen by 10 centimetres in size, printed on good paper with the wide margins and untrimmed edges that Paul preferred. The titles were printed on the title-pages in red-capitals, followed by names of authors and editors in black and then by the 'Arbor Scientiae; Arbor Vitae' mark. . The binding was limp "parchment antique" and the selling price was 6s 0d. " The Publishers' Circular described the Parchment Library Series as "a series of books which, whether as single volumes or in a set, will always be certain to please a cultured taste. The style in which they are produced makes them beautiful to the eye, and a very wise discrimination has marked the choice of the volumes honoured with a place on the list." The Chiswick Press was founded by Charles Whittingham I (1767-1840) in 1811. In 1838, the management of the Press was taken over by the founder's nephew Charles Whittingham II (1795-1876). C. Whittingham II, who published some of the early designs of William Morris, started to revive old typefaces and improve the quality of printing. Subsequently, The Chiswick Press became very influential in English printing and typography. N° de ref. de la librería
