DuGuay-Trouin was a daring French sea captain noted for his courage, guile, and naval expertise during the War of the Spanish Succession, from 1699 to 1712; during much of that time he acted as a privateer in American and Caribbean waters. His most glorious triumph was the capture in 17ll of Rio de Janeiro, where he seized vast amounts of booty and imposed a heavy retribution. These memoirs are largely devoted to his exploits in that period. Duguay-Trouin had written his memoirs in the 1720s and loaned them to the Duc de Orleans. A copy was made, and a pirated edition was published in Amsterdam in 1730. The text of that edition may be different from the present one. He sought to have the earlier edition suppressed and changed a good deal of text before he died in 1736. A quarto was issued in 1740 (differing in text from the 1730 edition), which was arguably the text he intended to be issued. Sabin 29198. Quoting Borba 272, "Pierre Mortier, the well-known Amsterdam book dealer, published several editions of the Memoires, beginning 1740, continuing 1746, 1748, 1756, 1769, and 1773, all of which contain the author's portrait, five plates, and the map."
